Dr. Spec’s research is in fungal infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients, including those with transplants. He serves as the Section Director of Transplant Infectious Disease. His research focuses on Cryptococcus, Histoplasma, Candida, Aspergillus, and other invasive molds. He studies the epidemiology and factors that affect outcomes in patients infected with fungi.
Dr. Spec serves as the Co-Director of our Invasive Fungal Clinic, which he founded in 2016, and is actively involved with the Mycoses Study Group (MSG), where he participates and leads multicenter studies focused on new diagnostic tests and treatments for invasive fungal infections. He is also the creator and leader of the Washington University Mycoses Group (a consortium of researchers interested in fungal infections). Dr. Spec is also a Deputy Editor of Open Forum Infectious Disease and the lead editor of the Comprehensive Review of Infectious Diseases, a best-selling textbook on infectious disease.
